Exemplary Service through Ohio Brigade Camp

We want to thank Dave Buncher for his exemplary service through Ohio Brigade Camp.

This year we celebrate 80 years since Joe Coughlin and the young Frontiersmen of Christain Service Brigade started Brigade camp in Ohio. God has forged this ministry through the talent of many great leaders throughout our history. Each leader has faithfully passed the torch to the next generation. Dave will be stepping out of a central leadership position after serving twelve years as camp director and two years as ministry director. He has the distinction of longest serving director in the 80-year history of Brigade camp in Ohio!

Dave Buncher’s leadership and big presence has helped set an exciting atmosphere of ministry at Brigade Camp for fourteen years. Several generations of junior counselors and collegiates have matured and flourished in their knowledge and practice of worship, skit presentation, and spiritual focus under Dave’s leadership.

Dave’s absence in a central leadership position will create a large hole to be filled. Pray that our camp director and program director, as well as collegiates, junior counselors, and volunteer staff will be endowed with vision and confidence from the Holy Spirit to fill the ministry atmosphere that Pastor Dave infused with passion. CSB exists to equip lay leaders to carry out God’s call in these areas. We trust God will use camp to grow our next generation of leaders into the tools He desires as they carry out His ministry at Ohio Brigade Camp.

We pray Dave will continue to be blessed and be a great blessing in his ministry at Cross of Hope Church (Parma Hts. Baptist). He continues in his role on the Stony Glen Board, and we trust he will not be a stranger to Brigade Camp in the years to come.

New Tree Climbers Materials released: CHESS

Tree Climbers is designed for dads or other mentors of first and second grade boys. As you may know, I have been leading the redevelopment of these materials.

CHESS, the second installment of the new Tree Climbers Guild materials is now available! It follows on the heels of our successful test module on Birds, which included a terrific birdhouse project.

CHESS is designed to help mentors engage very young boys in the world of chess and in learning about serving the King, the creator of all things, through the Bible and exciting original stories.

Are you a father of a young boy? I would like to encourage you to give it a try. You can do this on your own with your son or multiply the fun by inviting a couple of friends who have young sons as well. It is a short commitment of meeting four time to have fun, build relationships, and learn valuable life skills.

You can get your copy of Chess here.

In His Service and Yours,

Dale Kinkade

2025 Ohio Battalion Klondike Derby

The 2025 Ohio Klondike Derby is in the books. Snow turned to cold rain but couldn't take away the snowpack or dampen the spirits of the participants.

It was great to have Cross of Hope Church (Parma Heights Baptist) back after more than a decade to join Hope GMC, Portage Community, Goss, Huntsburg, and North-Mar in friendly competition.

Our Brigade Representative, Dale Kinkade, spoke about how he will never look at a saw the same way again after recently gained insights into how to sharpen crosscut saws. He used this to build an analogy about looking at our own lives and our world differently through discovering the truth of God's word. He gave examples of some of those truths, especially from the book of Genesis which was the focus book of the Bible quiz.

All teams exhibited great strength despite the weather, and even smaller teams were competitive in many of the events.

All teams competed in memory verses, Bible quiz, knots, fire building, winter survival, orienteering, axe throwing, log saw, biathlon, and sled race.

Congratulations to North-Mar C&MA, Battalion #1180, who took top honors.

Portage Community Chapel 8090 Represents at the Portage County Fair

Portage Community Chapel took the opportunity to display at the Portage County Fair last week, representing their Brigade unit and inviting people to join. They did a great job, and I had a few people take notice and send me pictures of the display. Thank you, PCC, for equipping men to disciple the next generation through CSB and for representing well at the Portage County Fair. May the Lord continue to work though you as you equip men to disciple boys and young men toward Christ and biblical worldview; to come to Christ and to live for Him through all they do.

And Now... Grandpa

I have held many titles over my lifetime so far, but on August 4th I took on the title of Grandpa for the first time. Hadassah Marie Toth was born to Joshua and Madelyn; a healthy 8# 5oz. girl. I will continue to practice teasing in order to live up to my new title but
will forgo purchasing a recliner for the time being. Grandma Jennifer is as proud as a momma grand-bear and takes great joy in "baby holding time."

Christain Service Brigade has had a significant role in helping develop the biblical character of both Hadassah's father and her grandfather. Maybe, Lord willing, Christian Service Brigade will play a significant role in the development of her husband's character as well...

Pray for Madelyn and Joshua as they step into their new role as mom and dad. It took about a week for them to return to as normal as life will be for the next 18+ years. They are doing a great job already!

Ohio Brigade Camp 2024 in the books!

Thank you for your prayer, support, and participation in Ohio Brigade Camp 2024! Another powerful season of ministry in now a part of our exciting history.

Ohio Brigade Camp 2024 served 419 campers over a 3 1/2-week period. They were served by 85 Sr. Staff, 11 Junior Counselors and 16 Service Crew over that 3 1/2-week period. We recorded 4 first-time decisions to follow Christ, 5 rededications, and 22 who came to leaders for prayer for special issues. We know there were other decisions which were not recorded.

A highlight, from my perspective as the Regional Director for Christian Service Brigade, is the stellar development of our junior leaders - our Junior Counselors ages 15-18. One of our primary objectives is for Brigade camp to be a tool to help raise up the next generation of leaders for the church. The Lord blessed us with a group of 11 quality young men, and the senior leadership team has stepped up to the plate to train up these young men for service. The growth and service of these 11 young men was outstanding. I'm really excited about the vision of our director, Greg Seifert, and our leadership team in this important area or raising up our next generation. I'm excited about how the Lord is using Brigade Camp to help young men become the men God has called them to be in leading in their families, in the church, and in their communities!

The success of Ohio Brigade Camp belongs to the Lord and to those who allow God to work through them as they serve. Recently Greg Seifert, our camp director, mentioned, "... the outstanding adult men and women that help us at camp.  Many of these people have been serving for years, some even decades.  Watching the men leading our Bible-studies, watching over their daily activities, teach them crafts or skills, and probably not sleeping very much is a true privilege to see.  I am humbled by the dedication and commitment that our senior counselors give to the campers, all the way from our small daughters to our high school seniors.  I would be remiss if I didn’t specifically mention our women volunteers:  without them our very successful father-daughter camp simply couldn’t exist.  They are amazing and awesome!"

"There are many aspects to running a summer camp, ranging from the mundane and selfless to the glorious.  As I guided and watched camp progress, my heart grew ever more in love with our mission."

"Our Lord’s work is indeed being accomplished...!"

Well said Greg! Thank you all, and praise the Lord!

The Passing of Joe Scarcella (1961-2023)

Joseph H. Scarcella went to be with our Lord and Saviour on September 20th after a short battle with a shockingly aggressive cancer.

Joe grew up in Christian Service Brigade and has been participating and serving in local Brigade ministries throughout most of his life. He has been a leader in Tree Climbers, Stockade, and Battalion at the Chapel of Akron. Joe has been a camp counselor and even an interim camp director at Ohio Brigade Camp. He has been serving on the Stony Glen Camp board of directors.

Joe lived out 2 Timothy 2:2 well, in Brigade fashion. He learned from faithful men, lived as a faithful man, and taught others to be faithful as well. We will miss him until we see Him face to face.

Terry Osman, 82, passed away March 12, 2023

Terry Osman was known in the Ohio Brigade community for his long-time dedication to leading at Stow Alliance Fellowship, Ohio Brigade Camp, archery... and Osman Pies. My generation always looked forward to complimentary deliveries of pies at summer camp - enough to feed the whole camp!! He was a generous supporter of Brigade Camp, the regional organization, and regional director with his talents, hobbies and businesses. We will miss him until we see Him face to face.

Brigade Camp Director's Report: from Dave Buncher

“Like a Fire” Brigade Camp 2022

 Jeremiah 20:9

9 If I say, “I will not mention him,

or speak any more in his name,”

there is in my heart as it were a burning fire

    shut up in my bones,

and I am weary with holding it in,

    and I cannot.

For so many of us many of the strongest memories of our time at camp echo one event.  The campfire.  At Brigade camp we make sure that these campfires are memorable.  Most of them would fall under the category of epic.  We build some rather large fires.  I can’t tell you how many times, after speaking at a campfire, I checked the back of my calves for blisters.  But more important than the fire itself is the fiery passion for Christ that is passed on to our campers.

Some of you who have been around Christian Summer Camps for a while will remember the old song “Pass It On.”  Many will only remember this song once you hear the first line:

 “It only takes a spark

To get a fire going

And soon all those around

Can warm up in its glowing

That's how it is with God's love

Once you've experienced it

You spread His love to everyone”

The message of this song is clear, the gospel that has taken hold of a man’s heart mustn’t be hidden it must be shared.  It is when we share the spark of God’s love for us that was exemplified in the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ, on the cross that the small fire within our hearts begins to turn into a roaring blaze.

This was our theme for our 2022 camp season, passing on the flame of God’s love for us: Evangelism.  Teaching this young generation of believers the importance of sharing the gospel with everyone in our lives.  Evangelist, Preacher, and Author, Charles Wesley said these words, “Catch on fire with enthusiasm and people will come for miles to watch you burn.”

As always, our team of volunteer Senior Counselors did an amazing job teaching our campers the importance of sharing the good news.  For these men the days at camp are long and arduous.  Most of them are up late ministering to their campers, with cabin devotions after campfire, and continue on with more direct one on one conversations, as the boys begin settling into their bunks for the night. We begin their day with Leaders’ Huddle at 7am, which means these men don’t get much sleep during their week of service.  However, I never hear a complaint… okay, maybe there is some complaining but mostly because we are all getting older 😊!  Our Counselors take a week away from their wives, children, jobs, and lives to serve God and share their faith to our campers.  I have deep respect for each one of them.  Thank you, men, for your sacrifice and service to our Savior!

We began our season with Father/Daughter and Father/Son camps.  This demographic seems to be the fastest growing part of our camp program.  Both groups near breaking record numbers.  There is something special about being able to provide these dads the opportunity to steal away three days of focused one on one time with their child.  I love to see them walking through camp, participating in activities, eating meals, and studying the Bible and praying… together!  I’ve heard this many times form dads in the program over the years and heard it again a number of times:  one dad pulled me aside, with tears in his eyes, and said, “Dave, thank you and your team for Father Daughter Camp.  This is the only time in the year that I can get my teenagers undivided attention.  We love coming here together!”

There was something different in our campers this year.  There was a true sense of unity and belonging in our campers.  One thing we often see is campers helping their peers, but in my eyes this year was off the charts.  It brings me such joy to see our campers cheering one another on and encouraging one another in their craft and skill areas, through game time, and as they celebrated the steps their cabinmates made spiritually.

One afternoon I had a Battalion camper approach me with some questions.  He wanted advice on how to encourage another young man in his cabin to make a decision for Christ.  The success of this ministry does not just come from the commitment of our leaders but also in the campers ministering to one another!  Celebrating together when a friend chooses to follow Christ as their Lord and Savior.

We had another phenomenal year of training in our Junior Counselor program.  This year we had 7 young men walk through our leadership training program.  I want to especially thank, Mike Sams, Jonathan DiLellio, and Garek Deere for the excellent job they did in training, equipping, and preparing these guys to serve.  Many of our Junior Counselors came from legacies where their fathers and grandfathers had been campers, JC’s, and served as counselors for decades, which is truly a testament of how this ministry has impacted not just individuals but also families.  And, I can’t go on without saying that these 7 men served with distinction, integrity, and passion.  Great job men!

It is difficult to clearly communicate how God worked in the lives of our campers this summer we can celebrate what we know.  Based upon our decision cards we celebrate 9 first time decisions for salvation and 12 campers who rededicated their lives to Jesus Christ!  There is much more to that story but only God knows the true impact that was made this summer.

There is much to celebrate, and much work to be done.  Please pray for our leadership team as we begin planning for next season.  Consider how you might get involved.  We are always on the lookout for medical staff, and help in the kitchen and sanitation services.  And, we are always looking for men to step up as Senior counselors to do what we do best:  Using our passion for life, to share our passion for Christ!

The Loss of Two More Stalwart Brigade Men

Warren McGee 1941 - 2021

Warren was actively serving as a Brigade leader at Parma Heights Baptist Church. He faithfully discipled many generations of boys for 41 years. His impact and memory is cherished by a great number of men who were, and boys who were being mentored by him during their formative years.

Warren McGee Obituary

James Lors 1930 - 2021

Jim was involved in Christian Service Brigade, Brigade Camp, and Stony Glen for over 50 years. His love for Stony Glen led him to enthusiastically serve for decades beyond his Brigade years on the Stony Glen Board and as a part of the Tuesday volunteer help. Jim wore his Stony Glen hat with great dignity and his clear wisdom and experience will be missed.

Gary Allen 1953 - 2021

I'm sad to announce the unexpected passing of Gary Allen on October 27th, 2021.

Gary was a long-time Brigade Chairman at The Chapel of Akron. Among other gifts, Gary had a personality that represented great friendship to all those around. He desired for everyone to know Christ and reached out to men and boys, especially through the Brigade program. Gary's comradery was contagious, and many men and boys have been influenced by Gary Allen's life of service through Christian Service Brigade and beyond.

We will miss Gary until we see him again in glory. If there is coffee in heaven, I'm sure we will be having many cups together.

Pray for Gary's family as they go through this difficult time.

See Gary's obituary.

Ken Slezak 1954 - 2021

I’m saddened to announce the passing of Ken Slezak. Ken lost his battle with cancer Friday, September 17, 2021.

I first met this tall man with a big heart at the Ohio Regional Shape-n-Race (pinewood) Derby events 20 years ago. Ken was using his talents on the tech side of the event. He was an important team member in helping to make the races exciting and memorable for all - and making sure we knew who won by the thousandth of a second. Ken was also very active in our summer camp scuba program as an assistant to our instructor. He used his talents and resources to make sure young men knew the gospel of Christ and the path to right-living with Him.

We will miss Ken until we see him when we meet our Lord and Savior face to face. Pray for his wife Loretta, his sons Eric and Ryan, and the rest of his family and friends as they pass through this valley of loss.
